How to write a Dental Assistant Resume

To find work as a dental assistant you will need to make sure that your dental assistant resume is top notch and stands out from the crowd. The sample dental assistant resume structure detailed below can be used for the best outcome. You may also find some dental assistant resume samples online and these can give some useful tips about what to include, however the outline here is recommended for your dental assistant resume:

Contact Details

The top of your dental assistant resume is the place where you should always put your full name, telephone numbers (including your cell), email address that you check regularly for new emails, and regular address. Students can consider including home and university addresses.

Dental Assistant Education

Your education section should follow your contact details. Always list it in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent. If you have qualifications directly related to the role applied for, these should be included in dental assistant resumes. In your education section, include: subject/s studied, educational institutes attended and their location, dates of graduation, any professional qualifications achieved.

Dental Assistant Work Experience

As a dental assistant, your work experience is very important, as it is this that will distinguish your dental assistant resume from that of other sample dental assistant resumes that the surgery will receive. Spend a lot of time on this section getting it right, for the best chance of success.

On your dental assistant resume, your work experience must be detailed out in reverse chronological order. Surgeries will be particularly interested in how you added value, that is, the extra things that you did that were above and beyond that which dental assistants might usually do as part of their job. A strong dental assistant resume sample will demonstrate how a candidate showed initiative to help to improve things around the surgery and help the dentist out. Customer service skills may also be relevant.

Try to not just focus on listing tasks that you did on your dental assistant resume, but also on achievements. Dental assistant resumes that just list responsibilities will not stand out from the crowd. For example, you could write something like:

  • Filing patient records

Or

  • Sterilizing equipment and preparing it for use.

These are valid points and probably typical responsibilities that you performed. However, our sample dental assistant resume recommends bullets that are structured as follows where possible, for a greater chance of getting that interview:

  • Developed new process for filing of client records so that they could be more easily found prior to patient arrival at the surgery.

Or

  • Introduced auditing process for equipment which cut back on losses and increased efficiency.

Less senior dental assistant resumes may not have this kind experience to bring to the role, but at a minimum you should not leave off any of the following if you did them: sending reminder letters, mixing fillings, assisting the dentist during procedures, surgery preparations work, greeting patients and making appointments.

Some aspects of your job may be of more value to an employer than you might think. A solid sample dental assistant resume will place some emphasis on that person’s ability to make the customers feel at ease. After all, a visit to the dentist can be quite stressful for some.

When creating the bullets focus on using action verbs. See in the example above how this sample dental assistant resume has used the words “Developed” and “Introduced”. These sorts of words best demonstrate your talent and usefulness to an employer.

Activities

Recent graduates seeking roles as a dental assistant could mention relevant activities that demonstrate that they have the ability to work in this field. Any experience demonstrating an aptitude for administrative tasks looks good on a sample dental assistant resume. Showing an aptitude for organization, customer service and team working will all look good on dental assistant resumes. More senior dental assistant professionals could include membership of professional organizations. Action verbs in the bullet points are the way to go.

Keywords

Your dental assistant resume must include relevant keywords that employers will search for when trying to identify suitable candidates for their dental assistant roles. A good sample dental assistant resume will include a number of suitable keywords and phrases which could include words such as “mixing fillings,” “customer service” and others depending on the job advertisement and key skills listed. Basically, if it is listed in the job ad, it should be in your resume somewhere, at least a couple of times.

The above provides a summary of how sample dental assistant resumes are structured and the sorts of information to include for the best chances of success. For those still at school, your university may also be able to provide you with sample dental assistant resumes to consider, which may have some other great ideas.
